Migratory Cover Model

The hinged top model is probably quite acceptable but it seems to me that insulating the entire top is a bit superfluous considering that the winter nest will not occupy the full hive body and for most of the year (Spring, Summer and Autumn) insulation is not needed.  I, therefore, think that a simpler top along the lines of a migratory cover might work just as well, be much simpler and cheaper to build and should not be too heavy or difficult to remove and replace.  The quilt will still serve to keep the brood nest covered during manipulations.  Winter insulation can be added by placing a 1" or 2" slab of Styrofoam over the brood nest area with appropriate weather protection.

The hive body proper is identical to the hinged top model.

The top is extremely simple.

The plywood cuts are also simplified and a full hive and parts for another can be had from two half sheets of plywood.

Here are some photos of finished hive
